Here's a section with a bunch of stuff that doesn't fall into other categories... the cassettes, the CDRs, the acetates, test pressings... some neat stuff that somebody may want to see a picture of!
THE TAPES & CDRS:
Since the beginning many of the BATTLETORN practices and stuff we've done has been taped onto old school cassette tapes. Not because we're into having EVERYTHING we've ever played on tape, but mostly because we have a hard time remembering songs/riffs etc that we write! Short term memory = zero!! Also, William and I will write songs at home (me on an acoustic guitar or just humming melodies/riffs) and tape them on a hand held recorder and bring them in for him ot hear. So we've got a ton of stuff on these tapes/CDRs.... from the second practice onwards we started laying down songs to tape, sometimes they get transferred to CDR later for reference and arranging at home. Interestingly, there are very few live tapes that we know of... considering we've played 100+ shows, you'd think we would have taped more of them- but there are probably only a handful (4 or 5) live tapes we know of, and only 1 or 2 videos.
An acetate is the first step of the record pressing process- it's cut in a mastering studio from the master tape/CDR and it's on a metal plated 'acetate' disc that is kinda smelly, pretty heavy, and to me one of the coolest musical artifacts there are. So, I've tried to collect the acetates for all our vinyl releases, and so far have been able to get them for all (except for the "Burn Fast" 45...) see below for pix/details on these!
"Peace of the Grave - EP"
These are the second step in the process- after the acetate discs get plated and the stampers are made, they make a test pressing LP for label and/or band to approve before they make the full run. I have the test pressings for the 45s too, but those are not handy so the pix of those will follow later! Here's the tests of the LPs though:
There was 15 of these pressed- but when we got them we realized they had made a mistake and not 'indexed' two of the songs... meaning the songs "Collapse" and "Villains" ended up as 'one track' on the vinyl- there was no space between them to denote a new song. Trivial to some, but we didn't want it like that, so we had it redone so that each song showed up as it's own cut on the record sides. I had made up some custom sleeves for the tests- and on the ones that were rejected I put a 'spoiled' stamp on them. Only the ones that came through my hands got the covers and stuff, Troubleman kept some copies and I had made sleeves to give them for theirs too, but then they just dropped out of contact so I lost interest in seeing them in my apartment and threw them away. So only maybe 7-8 of the 15 that were made ended up looking like this.
This was the corrected test version- which was approved and pressed. Again, there were 15 pressed, but probably only the 7-8 copies that went through my hands look like this, the rest are probably floating around with blank labels and lost in the void.
This LP is being pressed by United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN- a great and long running plant here in the US of A. We had it mastered at Aardvark and sent to United for pressing- they made up these 10 test pressings, which I made some custom covers for and sent them to some folks for approval and such. Watch for the real thing to hit the streets in April!!
